Two siblings face charges in court for purportedly killing a Benue businesswoman, burying her in a shallow grave, and absconding with her N490,000.

 

The Benue State Police Command has brought charges against two brothers, Terver Agwa and Terna Agwa, in a Makurdi chief magistrate court. They are accused of killing a Gboko-based businesswoman and robbing her of over N490,000. The suspects, both from Mbapen in Kendev, Tombo community, Buruku Local Government Area of the state, face charges of criminal conspiracy, robbery, and culpable homicide.

The criminals murdered the victim, Mrs. Nguhemen Sesugh, and buried her remains in a shallow grave. Before her death, Mrs. Sesugh, who traded in bags of rice, was lured by her killers to their enclave in Kendev, Mbatie in Buruku LGA, under the pretense of purchasing bags of unmilled rice.

"Mrs. Sesugh, dealing in rice at the Gboko rice mill, received a call from her murderers, who claimed to have several bags of rice for sale," revealed a source. Unaware of their criminal intent, she went to make the purchase with about half a million Naira in Buruku LGA, but she never returned.

Efforts to locate her were in vain until a recent investigation by security personnel led to the discovery of her shallow grave at Kendev village, Mbatie in Buruku LGA. Her body was decomposing, and the cash she carried for the purchases was not found. The investigation also resulted in the arrest of some individuals, including the two brothers accused of orchestrating her murder.

The deceased victim's body was promptly transported to her village, Tsambe, in Vandeikya LGA of the state by close family members and a former House of Representatives member from the area, who ensured she received a proper burial.

Inspector Godwin Ato, the prosecuting police officer, addressed the court, stating that the two suspects deceived the victim into believing they were selling bags of rice.

He further informed the court that when the woman went to their residence in Buruku to purchase the rice, the accused collaborated to lure her to an isolated bush where they strangled her, buried her remains in a shallow grave, and fled with her N490,000.

Ato added that the deceased's husband reported the matter to the police, revealing that his wife received a call from one of the accused, Terver Agwa, regarding the alleged rice sale.

During police investigation, both accused individuals were arrested, and they reportedly confessed to the crime.

Magistrate Kelvin Mbanongon ordered the remand of the two suspects at the Makurdi Correctional Center, adjourning the case to February 19, 2024, for further proceedings.
