Residents of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, and its environs are currently experiencing fuel scarcity as long queues have returned to filling stations. Punch correspondent observed that the scarcity started around 3pm on Monday when fuel dealers decided to close majority of the filling stations in the state capital. It was gathered that the fuel dealers closed shop due to speculations that the main depot in Port Harcourt was no longer distributing fuel. The sudden closure of the filling stations caused a long queue at the popular Mobil filling station at Waterlines, along the Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway as motorists had a tough time before they could purchase Premium Motor Spirit. Though the filling station was selling at the normal price of N145 per litre, some motorists had to wait for over an hour before they could purchase fuel. The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday said the governorship election in Kogi and Bayelsa states would hold on November 2. The National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education, INEC, Mr Festus Okoye, in a statement also said the commission had approved the timetable and schedule of activities for the election. He stated that the official notice for both elections would be issued on August 1, while the parties were to hold their primaries from August 2 to 29. He added that campaigns would commence on August 2 and end on October 1. Meanwhile, Okoye in another statement said INEC had approved a proposal to conduct an extensive review and debriefing on the 20l9 general elections He explained that such would allow for the evaluation of the commission’s performance to address the challenges and strengthen operational and institutional capacities to conduct free, fair, credible and peaceful elections.

Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja on Monday sentenced a bricklayer, Idowu Gbolahan, to life imprisonment for defiling his seven-year-old niece. Gbolahan, was arraigned on one count of defilement by the Lagos State Government, committed the offence at his residence on Morocco Road, Shomolu on August 11, 2018. The prosecutor, Feyinti Ogbemudia, had told the court that the convict molested the victim when she went to drink water in her grandmother’s room. He had told the court that 30-year-old Gbolahan pulled off the victim’s pants and had forceful sexual intercourse with her while the cry of the victim drew the attention of neighbours who rescued her. He added that the victim was referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where she was afterward referred to the Mirabel Centre for examination and treatment. Six persons as been reportedly lost their lives in Ido Ani in the Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State on Monday when a gang of armed robbers attacked the First Bank branch in the town.  Police source said the six persons included a police inspector; the Vice Principal of the Ido Ani Grammar School, Mr David Oluloro; and four others.   The source said the robbers gained entry into the bank around 2.30pm by blowing off the door with a substance suspected to be dynamite and asked the workers to open the Automated Teller Machines and stole unspecified amount of money from the machines.   It was also learnt that social and business activities in the town were paralysed for several hours as human and vehicular movements came to a halt while the robbery was going on. The General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries Worldwide, Dr Daniel Olukoya, has lost his 95-year-old mother, Janet. A statement issued by the Chairman, MFM Media Committee, Pastor Oladele Bank-Olemoh, stated that Mama Olukoya died in her sleep in the wee hours of March 31, 2019, 25 years after she lost her husband. “Mama was a fervent worshiper at the MFM International Headquarters, Onike-Yaba, Lagos, where she was a prayer warrior and a member of the Elders Group.   The burial programme of Mama Olukoya will be announced later. She is survived by Dr Daniel Olukoya and Mrs Funmilayo Olowoake, also a member of the MFM, grandchildren and other family members,” the statement added.

The Third edition of the annual U-15 Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) and LaLiga Promises Tournament kicked-off yesterday with 21 football teams. The tournament which is part of the NPFL and LaLiga’s drive to the develop grassroots football in Nigeria has been planned to encourage NPFL Clubs to set up and maintain youth structures. The preliminary stages of the competition will hold across Benin, Abuja, Kaduna and Enugu. The quarterfinals, semi-finals and the final will then be hosted at the Agege stadium in Lagos from the 22 nd – 28 th    April, 2019. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has urged candidates for the 2019 UTME to adhere strictly to the printing order of their examination slips, to avoid unnecessary issues. This was contained in the board’s weekly bulletin tagged ‘JAMB BULLETIN’, by the Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, in Lagos. According to the bulletin, printing of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) notification slip is on-going, as the board has since made it ready for all candidates who registered for the examination. Over 1.8 million candidates registered for the examination which has been scheduled to commence on Thursday, April 11. “The notification is to allow candidates know their examination schedules, which includes time, date and venue of the examination. “Candidates are therefore advised to take the printing order seriously in order for them to have an idea of the location of their centres, well ahead of the examination.
