The Governor of Osun State, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, has appealed against the judgment of the election petition tribunal, which invalidated his victory in the September 2018 governorship election that brought him to power. Unsatisfied with the tribunal’s verdict, Oyetola has filed a notice of appeal, listing 39 grounds why the tribunal’s decision should not stand. In the notice of appeal, which he filed on March 26, 2019, Oyetola urged the Court of Appeal to nullify the majority judgment which he argued was perverse, replete with contradictions and not supported by the evidence led by the petitioners. The governor, through his lead counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), urged the appellate court to not only set aside the tribunal’s majority judgment but to also dismiss the October 16, 2018 petition by the PDP and Adeleke. Justice Afam Nwobodo of the Enugu State High Court has nullified the purported election of Mr Victor Meniru as the traditional ruler of the Egwu Achi autonomous community in the Oji River Local Government Area of the state. The court also restrained him from parading himself as the traditional ruler of the community and ordered for a fresh election within 90 days. Not satisfied with the alleged subversion of the laid down processes of selection and installation of traditional rulers in the Egwu Achi community, Mr Okechukwu Onwuka, Rev. Fr. Martin Udejioforo and two others approached the court in suit number HOR/5/2010, on behalf of themselves and the Egwu Achi General Assembly, challenging the alleged election of Meniru as the traditional ruler of the community. Joined in the suit were Meniru, Madu Raphael and Sir Joseph Azulu as defendants. The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ahmadu Fintiri, has been declared winner of the Adamawa State governorship election. The Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Andrew Haruna, declared the result on Friday morning in Yola after the supplementary election in 44 polling units across 14 local government areas of the state. Haruna said Fintiri polled 376,552 votes to defeat incumbent Governor Jibrilla Bindow of the All Progressives Congress who got 336,386 votes. The Returning Officer said Sen. Abdul-Azeez Nyako of the ADC scored 113,237 votes to place third, followed by Emmanuel Bello of the SDP, who garnered 29,792 votes. Haruna said total votes cast was 899,097, out of which 871,307 votes were valid and 27,790 votes, invalid. Fintiri, who was the Speaker of the Adamawa House of Assembly in 2014, also served as Acting Governor in July 2014, following the impeachment of the then Gov. Murtala Nyako.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday launched a micro pension plan for self-employed Nigerians. The launch took place at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja. Mr Buhari launched the programme by supervising the registration of a Keke NAPEP operator, Sagir Shawai, a resident of Karu village of the Federal Capital Territory. The president said the programme was conceived for Nigerians in the informal sector of the country. He appealed to trade associations, workers unions and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the informal sector to join hands with the government in enlightening their members on the importance of the scheme. “This initiative will capture those that are not fully captured in the existing pension scheme. In the past three years, we have provided loans to farmers and others in the informal sector. The micro pension plan is the next step,” he said. Details later…

Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, has said that some states in Nigeria can now boast of constant power supply. He made the assertion on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday. “Sitting down here I can tell you some states that have almost 24 hours – Kebbi, Yobe. Some have five, some have 10 and there are still outages,” he said. He added that the constant power supply in some states is due to the increase in the transmission capacity, noting that the transmission capacity has grown to about 8,100 watts as of December 2018.
