 A United States citizen, Vonapolouis Moss, has explained to the Kwara State Police Command how she was tricked into travelling to Nigeria by Joshua Awoyele, a 23-year-old suspected Internet fraudster widely known as “yahoo boy”. She further added that she met him on TikTok, a social media platform, and he claimed to be an American by the name of Howard Adams currently working in Nigeria. Narrating the incident, the state police command said the suspected fraudster identified as Joshua Awoleye, a Higher National Diploma student of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin allegedly lured the foreigner and swindled her of the sum of $1000 when she came to Nigeria. Parading the suspect at the police headquarters in Ilorin on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, Paul Odama, said that Awoleye of Sabo-Oke Road, Ilorin lodged Moss in a hotel and defrauded her.  The police in Lagos state have arrested a mother and her partner for allegedly battering her two children aged 5 and 2.   The woman identified as Busola Oyediran and her partner, Akebiara Emmanuel, were arrested on Friday, January 13, by the police following reports by neighbours.   The concerned neighbours had alerted the police of the consant physical abuse of the minors by their biological mother and her partner. Following the report, the police stormed the Egbeda/Idimu home of the couple and arrested them. The police later visited the hospital where the neighbours had taken the battered children for treatment. When confronted, their mother claimed the children fell from a motorcycle and suffered serious injuries. Confirming the arrest , the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Benjamin, said the couple is currently in detention and will be arraigned in court by Monday, January I6. The Edo state government on Friday, January 13, announced that two more victims of the train attack in the Igueben area of Edo State have been rescued. Recall that 20 travellers were abducted last Saturday January 7, while waiting to board a train from the Igueben Station to Warri in nearby Delta State. The state’s Commissioner for Communications and Orientation Chris Nehihkare in a briefing in Benin City, said one of the rescued victims include the President of the Igueben Area Customary Court Precious Aigbonoga.

A fire incident that occurred in the early hours of Friday, January 13, has claimed the lives of an Imam, Mohammadu Sani, his wife, Raulatu Sani, his son, Hashim Sani (8) and an infant, Fatima Sani. FRSC Zaria Zone Commander, Mohammad Umar told newsmen that the fire began around 1.00 am at Hajiya Maituwo St., Low-Cost Area Zaria, Zaria Local Government area of the state. The fire service was called after the fire had already destroyed a substantial part of the house. Umar added that the intervention of the fire service curtailed the spread of the inferno to neighbouring houses in the area.  The Supreme Court of Nigeria has dismissed a bid by the family of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, to stop moves by the Federal Government to reopen criminal forfeiture proceedings against the ex-Head of State. The fresh move to reopen the fraud probe is targeted at some family members over their alleged complicity in looting the nation’s treasury during Abacha’s administration. The Supreme Court on Friday, Jan. 13, upheld the judgments of both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, which had earlier endorsed the power of the Federal Government to reopen criminal forfeiture proceedings against the family. The presiding judge, Justice Emmanuel Agim, dismissed the suit for want of merit and substance. The appeal marked: SC/641/2013 was filed by the eldest surviving son of the late Abacha, Mohammed and his brother, Abba (for themselves and on behalf of the family of Gen. Abacha).

 The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Pankshin Division, Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State, has been kidnapped by gunmen. According to police officer, the DPO, whose name is yet to be known, was kidnapped by the gunmen after they shot him in his hotel room in the council area. The source said, “The DPO was just posted to Pankshin about three days ago. He was staying in a hotel in Pankshin and was in that hotel when the gunmen came and shot him before taking him away. Since then, we have not seen him.” As of the time of filing this report, the Police Public Relations Officer in Plateau State, DSP Alfred Alabo, had yet to respond to calls made to him.

 The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for the collection of permanent voter cards (PVC). The commission announced this in a statement on Thursday signed by Festus Okoye, its national commissioner and chairman, information and voter education. INEC had fixed December 12 to January 22 for the collection of PVCs in all the 774 LGAs. It also said it would devolve PVC collection to the 8,809 registration areas/wards from January 6 to January 15, 2023, after which the exercise will revert to the LGA offices until January 22 when the process will end. According to the statement by the commission, as a result of the deadline change, the collection of PVCs from registration areas will now continue till January 22, after which collection at LGAs will continue on January 23.

  The Ondo State Government has warned the two prominent monarchs in Ikare Akoko, the Olukare of Ikare and Owa Ale of Iyometa, if the town witnessed another turmoil.  Nigeria’s embattled Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, quietly returned to the country on Wednesday, sources in the apex bank and the presidency have told PREMIUM TIMES.
