Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Friday, July 5, 2019, ordered the interim forfeiture of some pieces of jewelry and a customized gold iphone all valued at $40m belonging to Diezani Alison-Madueke, a former Minister of Petroleum Resources. Justice Oweibo gave the order, following an ex parte application filed by EFCC. The applicant, through its lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, stated that the items were found and recovered from the premises of the respondent, Alison-Madueke. The EFCC further stated that it reasonably suspected that the items were acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities. The items are: Bangles( 419); rings (315); earrings (304); necklace (267); wristwatches(189); necklace and earrings (174); bracelet (78); brooch (77); pendants( 74); necklace(48); necklace, bracelet, earring and ring (44); necklace, earrings and rings (32); pendants and earrings (30) and necklace and bracelet (18). The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has said that no fewer than 80 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates nationwide are undergoing prosecution for various cases of malpractice and fraud in the 2019 examination. The JAMB Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, stated this in a meeting with journalists in Abuja on Thursday. He added that apart from the 80 standing trial, a number of candidates had been jailed for malpractices in the last two months. He did not specify the number of those jailed. The registrar noted that although the board spent a lot of money on the ongoing prosecution, it was worth it so that the examination system in the country would be sanitised. Oloyede said, “We believe there is an organised and sponsored campaign against the UTME for whatever reasons. The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its governorship candidate in the September 2018 election in Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, challenging the election of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress. The apex court in a split decision of five to two, the apex court’s panel of seven Justices held that the proceedings and the majority judgment of the Osun State Election Petition Tribunal which had declared the PDP as the winner of the poll were a nullity. Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour who read the lead majority judgment of the apex court held that the absence of Justice Peter Obiorah who later read the lead judgment of the tribunal during the February 6, 2019 hearing, had rendered the entire proceedings of the said tribunal and its judgment a nullity. Adamawa-North lawmaker, Senator Elisha Abbo, has been drawn into a fresh scandal as a photojournalist, Olumuyiwa Owolabi, has accused him of assault and breach of agreement. Owolabi told The PUNCH that Abbo not only assaulted him but got the police to lock him up in Adamawa. He said he first met Abbo in 2014 during the run-up to the June 2014 Ekiti State governorship election which Ayodele Fayose won. Owolabi, who was the official photographer of Fayose during the election, said he met Abbo in Ekiti State and Abbo told him that he would like him to do some jobs for him. Six students and a lecturer of the Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State, who have been in detention since February, have regained their freedom. They were granted bail on Wednesday by the Federal High Court 2 sitting in Awka and presided over by Justice Babatunde Quadri. Their arrest and detention followed a petition by the management of the university to the Inspector-General of Police that they tarnished the reputation of the institution on the Internet. Following the development, security operatives picked the students and lecturer,  including those participating in the National Youth Service Corps scheme, took them to the Okija campus of the university from where they were first detained in a police cell and later sent to the Awka Prison. Six students and a lecturer of the Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State, were on Tuesday returned to the Awka Prison following the absence of the presiding judge, Justice Babatunde Quadri, of the Federal High Court 2, Awka. The students were arrested and detained in January for posting on Facebook an opinion considered to be injurious to the university by the management. They were granted bail by the court in February, but were unable to fully perfect the bail conditions, which they described as stringent. At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, parents, relations and lawyers to the defendants were told by a court clerk that the matter had been stepped down for Wednesday (today). Speaking with journalists, one of the parents of the detained students, Mr Christopher Onyejekwe, expressed sadness over the development. The family of Muyiwa Olushola is in mourning after the computer programmer allegedly committed suicide by taking a drink suspected to be laced with an insecticide, Sniper, at Mosadolorun in the Iba Local Council Development Area of Lagos State. A 19-year-old Ghanaian, Joe Osein, who was on Tuesday arraigned before an Osun State Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo, said he raped his victim after consuming several bottles of alcohol and smoking cigarettes. The police prosecutor, Abiodun Fagboyinbo, said Osein confessed to feeling bad after he had committed the crime alongside one Gbenga Ayelangbe, a commercial motorcyclist, on June 16, 2019, around 10pm in Osogbo. Osein and Ayelangbe, having thoroughly beaten the victim, took her on a motorcycle to the latter’s residence in the Kolawole area of Osogbo, where they allegedly raped her, stole her mobile phone and bag containing the sum of N34,500. The prosecutor added that the offences contravened Cap 516 A(1) , 335, 357 and 390(4) B, Laws of Osun State, 2003. Umuoke Obowo police station was, yesterday, set ablaze by the irate youth of the town, following the alleged killing of one Ikenna Ogbunigwe by a policeman. Ogbunigwe was confirmed dead at Mercy Hospital in Umuoke, triggering the youth to descend on the police station, carting away firearms and other exhibits at the station and releasing detainees. Monday was a sad day for the Nigeria Police Force as it lost six of its personnel to unknown gunmen in Bayelsa and Rivers states, while a station was set ablaze in Imo State. In the most deadly of the attacks, some gunmen invaded a police station in Agudama, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, and killed the Divisional Police Officer, SP Ola Rosanla; a pregnant policewoman, identified as Joy Wellington; and two other yet-to-be-identified cops on duty. That is why when a language goes into extinction, one of the vital ements that dies with it is the people’s legacy of proverbs. Unfortunately, this is the threat that many Nigerian languages face now, while many of us watch like unrepentant prodigal sons. English also boasts (not boasts of) many proverbs, which are like an asset to every user of the language. Like other figurative devices, the wise sayings are not to be overused, though. Michael de Adder, a Canadian cartoonist has lost his job just two days after his illustration of President Donald Trump playing golf over the bodies of two drowned migrants went viral on social media. Michael de Adder said on Twitter that he had been let go by a publishing company in New Brunswick, Canada. His illustration depicted President Trump asking the two dead migrants, "Do you mind if I play through?" The South East governor’s forum led by the governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi has categorically joined other political zones in the country to denied members of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) of having Ruga settlement in the zone.
