An American, Marco Ramirez, was on Thursday re-arraigned before the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja for allegedly defrauding some Nigerians of $565,000 (about N203.4m) on the pretext of helping them secure the United States Green Card. He was arraigned alongside his companies, USA Now LLC, Eagle Ford Instalodge Group LP and USA Now Capital Group by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on amended 12 counts bordering on conspiracy and obtaining under false pretences.  According to the EFCC, Ramirez and his companies, sometime in February 2013 and August 2013 in Lagos, defrauded Ambassador Godson Echejue, Abubakar Sodiq and Olukayode Sodimu of the said sum. The defendant and his companies had been arraigned on June 22, 2017, before Justice Josephine Oyefeso on 16 counts bordering on the same offences and pleaded not guilty to the charges. An unidentified gunman opened fire on youths riding horses during a wedding ceremony in Kano on Wednesday. The youth, who were said to be celebrating the wedding of one of their colleagues, were shot at and wounded by the yet-to-be identified gunman. The victims, who suffered varying degrees of gunshot injuries, were rushed to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for medical attention. In an interview, the father of one of the victims, Malam Mohammed Abdullahi, described the incident as very unfortunate. “I have never witnessed this kind of madness in my life for someone to just open fire on innocent youths, without any just cause,” he stated. As of the time of filing this report, the victims were still at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, receiving treatment. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the shooting but said he did not have the details yet.   Copyright PUNCH.

The National Youth Service Corps, on Thursday, said it had withdrawn corps members posted to areas affected by bandit attacks in Niger State. The state Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs Funmilayo Ajayi, said this while briefing newsmen after the swearing-in ceremony of new corps members at the orientation camp in Paiko. Ajayi said, “We will not post corps members to these areas because we cannot afford to lose any of them. “Our eyes are on the corps members for the whole year; we are their parents and guardians. We owe them protection until they finish their service year. “We have recalled all our corps members from crisis areas and re-posted them; we will not send any corps member to areas where bandits have carried out attacks. “We are aware that the state government and security agencies are on top of the situation. The Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday said it had withdrawn and reissued over 70 certificates of return after the 2019 general elections. Mr Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner, Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, said this at an electoral reform round-table organised by the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room and the Kofi Annan Foundation in Abuja. Twenty-one-year-old Christabel Buoro, a student of the University of Benin, allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday over a failed love affair. The lifeless body of the 300-level student of Medical Laboratory was discovered on Tuesday at her hostel located on Plot 4 Uwaifo Lane, off Newton Street, Ekosodin, a sprawling students’ community behind the Ugbowo campus of the university.  Unconfirmed reports had it that Christabel mixed an insecticide, popularly called Sniper, with a soft drink, which she allegedly took. An empty sachet of detergent was found inside the room. A source in the compound told our correspondent that Christabel’s corpse was later discovered. President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Mr. Mele Kolo Kyari as the new Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, bringing to an end the tenure of Maikanti Baru, as the oil firm’s boss. NNPC’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Ndu Ughamadu, who disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday morning, stated that the President also appointed alongside Kyari, seven new Chief Operating Officers. Until his new appointment, Kyari, a geologist, was Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division of NNPC and also doubled, since May 13, 2018, as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. The 32-year-old Nigerian man who destroyed five embassy cars in London, yesterday, has been arrested by the police. According to reports, Jeffery Apkovweta Ewohime initially caused problem at the Belgian embassy where his passport was confiscated. After he was turned back by the embassy because he arrived "late", he lashed out by using iron rods and stones to destroy vehicles parked within the embassy's premises. Muhammed Babandede, the Comptroller General of Immigration Service confimed the incident in a statement Monday night. According to him, Ewohime arrived the Nigerian mission in London for passport services. He said, "He arrived late and was told by the Security that the Mission has closed for the day. He went about destroying Nigeria's diplomatic vehicles worth hundreds of thousands of taxpayers money. The passport in question has been issued since 6th of June 2019. A teenager has lost his havard admission after a racist comment he made when he was 16 surfaced. Kyle Kashuv, 18, who is one of the survivors of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting that left 17 students and teachers dead,  made some racist comments few months before the massacre in Parkland, Florida and the comments recently resurfaced and cost him dearly. Kyle, a gun rights activist, was admitted to Harvard earlier this year but his admission has been rescinded after the screenshots of him using racial slurs surfaced.

Ten years old Fitrah Adegbite has emerged the winner of the Association of Private Educators in Nigeria /Grace Schools Senior Primary Spelling Bee Competition. Adegbite, who is a primary five pupil of Greenwood House School, won the spelling competition tagged “Super Spellers”. The competition had 51 participants from several schools in Lagos State and held at Grace Schools, Gbagada, Lagos. Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji Arakeji, Osun State has reportedly expelled no fewer than 100 students over alleged offences contravening the rules and regulations of the institution. Some of the offences allegedly committed by the affected students included the use of drugs and India hemp and non-payment of school fees, among others. The university was shut for two weeks in May after a protest by the students against alleged insecurity on the campus.
