Pakistan court sentences man to death for blasphemy

  An anti-terrorism court in northwest Pakistan has convicted and sentenced a Muslim man to death after he was accused of posting blasphemous content in a WhatsApp group. Syed Muhammad Zeeshan was convicted under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act and Anti-Terrorist Act by the court in Peshawar on Friday, March 24.  "Accused Syed Muhammad Zeeshan, son of Syed Zakaullah in custody has been convicted and sentenced after being found guilty", the court order said, a copy of which was obtained by AFP. Zeeshan, who is a resident of the northwest city of Mardan, was also fined 1.2 million rupees ($4,300) and handed a total of 23 years imprisonment. He has the right to appeal. The Lagos State Government says a case of involuntary manslaughter in addition to reckless and negligent acts has been established against Chrisland School, some members of staff and a vendor in the death of a 12-year-old student, Whitney Adeniran. Recall that Adeniran slumped during her school’s inter-house sport on February 9 and an autopsy later revealed that she died from Asphyxia and electrocution. The Presidential Election Petition Court sitting in Abuja, on Friday, March 24, ordered the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, should be served with copies of petitions seeking to nullify his election, through substituted means. Vanguard reports that a three-man panel of the court led by Justice Joseph Ikyegh, directed that the petitions should be served on Tinubu, through his political party, the All Progressives Congress. This comes after separate ex-parte applications that were brought before the court by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar and his counterpart in the Labour Party, Peter Obi. The duo accused Tinubu of deliberately avoiding the service of their petitions on him. They told the court that several attempts they made to effect service of the petitions on Tinubu, proved ab%rtive. Appeal Court upholds Adeleke as the duly elected governor of Osun State

The court of appeal sitting in Abuja has ruled that Ademola Adeleke was duly elected as the governor of Osun State in the gubernatorial election that took place on July 16, 2022. A three-member panel of justices gave the judgement on Friday, March 24. The panel of judges, while delivering judgment in the appeal filed by Adeleke, held that the election tribunal erred when it ruled that the 1st and 2nd respondents (Gboyega Oyetola and the All Progressives Congress) proved their allegation of over-voting. Recall that the Osun governorship election tribunal, in January, held that Oyetola was able to prove that there was over-voting in some of the polling units. Consequently, the majority judgment of the tribunal ordered INEC to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Adeleke and issue a fresh one to Oyetola as the duly elected governor of Osun.

INEC Under Pressure To Review Kano, Kaduna, Ogun Polls

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is under pressure to review the just concluded 2023 general elections where evidence of malpractices has been established. Some Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the country have asked the commission to ensure that there is evidence of electoral malpractices and that the commission should review allegations of voter suppression and vote buying based on provisions of the law. The CSOs are Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), Transparency International (TI) and the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC). A report released by their leader, Awwal Musa Rafsanjani, said INEC should review elections where they are confirmed to be rigged. “INEC must review all evidence of electoral malpractices presented before it,” Rafsanjani said in the report compiled by the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG). The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved over N4 billion for the construction of barracks for personnel of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The attorney-general of the federation, Abubakar Malami, who disclosed this on Wednesday, said: “As you are aware, there has been renewed and sustained onslaught against drug cartels and barons over time. Within the three quarters of 2023 about 18,940 arrests were affected by the NDLEA and indeed drugs with the estimated value of over N40 billion were confiscated. Again, about 2,904 convictions were recorded. 4 men To Die By Hanging For Robbery and kidnapping

 Four men were on Thursday, March 23, sentenced to death by hanging by a Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja.   The convicts - Victor Chukwunonso, Ifeanyi Maduaka, Obinna Nwankwo, and Richard Nwabueze - were sentenced for armed robbery and the kidnapping of a woman, Mrs Gloria Emole.   Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo held that the prosecution was able to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.   The convicts were said to have committed the offences on November 19, 2012, at about 8.30 am. They were arraigned on July 13, 2013, and were remanded in prison custody.   The convicts were arraigned on a three-count bordering on conspiracy, armed robbery and kidnapping preferred against them by Lagos State.   The state Director of Public Prosecution, Dr Babajide Martins, had told the court during their arraignment that they kidnapped the victim who was about to leave her house at 7, Unity Street, Ogudu GRA, Lagos.   According to the prosecutor, the offences committed are contrary to and punish

  A woman and her Nigerian boyfriend were arrested with drugs by members of the East London Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Eastern Cape, South Africa.   The People’s Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Enugu, Peter Mbah, has been declared the winner of the 2023 polls in the state by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Mbah’s declaration came after days of controversy over the results from Nkanu East Local Government Area. According to the Returning Officer, Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe, collation was taken over by the INEC national headquarters in Abuja after those of them in Enugu could not have a common ground. Mbah polled 160,895 votes slightly above his closest rivals — Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party (LP) who scored 157,552 and Uche Nnaji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who got 14,575 votes, amongst others.

Suspected ritualists kill man, harvest his body parts in Ondo

  A yet-to-be-identified man has been found dead with some of his body parts missing in Akure, the Ondo state capital.  The spokesperson of the state police command, Olufumilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, who disclosed this to newsmen, said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Oba-Ile Police Station and his men had visited the incident scene. The deceased body was found dumped around the Benin motor park area of the state. She said the corpse had been checked and moved to the mortuary in the specialist hospital, Akure. “Preliminary findings showed that the man was said to be a driver from Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo state,” she said The police spokeswoman added that the corpse of the deceased has been deposited at the state morgue.

 The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state. Declaring the result at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) State Headquarters in Abakaliki on Sunday, the State Returning Officer, Charles Igwe, said Mr Nwifuru garnered a total of 199,131 votes cast across the 13 local governments in the state.   Oyibo Nwani, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has been killed by suspected political thugs, IGBERETV reports. Oyibo Nwani, an agent in the governorship and House of Assembly elections, was shot dead by the thugs who stormed his polling unit in the Onicha Local Government Area on Saturday, March 18, 2023. Onicha LGA is home of the PDP governorship candidate, Chief Ifeanyi Odii. According to report, the thugs came to snatch ballot boxes but youths made frantic efforts to resist them. During the scuffle, the PDP chieftain who held tightly to a ballot box was shot in the head. Confirming the killing, spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, stated that Nwani was a victim of stray bullets from attacks by gunmen in the area.

 Chelsea football club is reportedly planning to sign Napoli's Victor Osimhen in the summer in a player-plus-cash deal.  The deal player-plus-cash deal is expected to include Christian Pulisic moving to Italy.  It remains to be clear whether the Serie A leader would be open to such an offer, but the prospect of Pulisic playing more minutes at the Stadio Armando Maradona than he currently does at Stamford Bridge could be exciting for him.  Despite manager Graham Potter's future hanging in the balance, club executives are seemingly intent on planning its recruiting strategy for next season, according to Italian website Calciomercato.  Per TransferMarkt, Osimhen is estimated to be worth $74million (€70million).  The 24-year-old Nigerian is in the form of his life this season, scoring 21 goals in 23 matches in Serie A, as Napoli remains 19 points clear of second-place Lazio. 

PDP Wins Enugu South, Nkanu East As Labour Party Takes Igboeze South

  The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has won Enugu South and Nkanu East local government areas while Labour Party won Igboeze South local government in the ongoing governorship election in Enugu State. According to the results announced, the PDP won Enugu South with 10557 votes while Labour came second with 7438 votes. The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA came third with 3110 votes while the All Progressives Congress, APC, got a paltry 560 votes. Below is how the other parties performed in Enugu South local government: APM 06 APP 05 BP 19 NNPP 144 NRM 37 PRP 44 SDP 07 YPP 13 ZLP 13 The story is the same for PDP in Nkanu East as the party garnered 30350 votes while the Labour Party came a very distant 2nd with 1855 votes, the APC scored 448 votes while APGA got 188 votes. Nkanu East is the local government of the PDP governorship candidate.
