Rivers Crisis: Two Lawmakers Who 'Defected' Now Undecided
Two out of the 27 Rivers State House of Assembly lawmakers who switched to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday have distanced themselves from the defection.
Tonye Adoki, representing Port Harcourt Constituency II, and Linda Somiari Stewart, representing Okrika Constituency, stated yesterday that they are undecided about their next course of action and have not joined any political party.
They have also apologized to Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Meanwhile, the federal government has disassociated itself from the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, clarified after a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that the government should not be held responsible for the conflict between the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Idris emphasized that the federal government played no role in the crisis, which led to the defection of 27 lawmakers from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, resulting in their seats being declared vacant by the Legislature.
He noted that Wike's position on the crisis does not reflect the federal government's stance.
Idris emphasized that the federal government is committed to ensuring peace and tranquility nationwide, including in Rivers.
He clarified that the issues in Rivers are a result of a political problem within the state, not created by the federal government.
Regarding Asari Dokubo's allegations against President Bola Tinubu, the government's spokesperson considered it advisory, stating that it doesn't imply federal government involvement.
Meanwhile, the PDP's national leadership directed legal action to declare vacant the seats of 25 Rivers State House of Assembly members who defected to the APC, aiming for fresh elections within the constitutionally stipulated time.
