The Lagos State Police Command reported the arrest of three armed robbery suspects accused of robbing a woman of N3.2 million and a vehicle. The Command's spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday, stating that the Rapid Response Squad apprehended the suspects.
The gang leader,Sheriff Owolabi, who had been on the police's wanted list, confessed to the crime, leading to the arrest of another gang member, Ibrahim Gambo, in the Ibafo area of Ogun. The suspects sold the robbed car in Ibadan to a receiver from Cotonou, Benin Republic. Further investigation revealed that the same buyer, referred to as Alhaji from Cotonou, was involved in multiple car snatchings in Lagos.
Additionally, Sheriff Olakunle was arrested in Mushin for assisting the suspects in selling stolen phones, and the police traced the POS operator who facilitated cashing the money transferred from the victim's account. Hundeyin explained that Owolabi and his gang surrounded their victim on November 14 around 10 pm as she was leaving her office in Oregun, Ikeja, forcibly taking her into her Toyota car with registration number BWR 49 DE and driving away.
Hundeyin mentioned that the suspects reportedly coerced the woman into transferring approximately N3.2 million from her account to an account provided by them, and they also took her phones. Subsequently, after taking her money and belongings, the suspects drove her to Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where they ejected her from the vehicle. Hundeyin noted that an ongoing investigation aims to apprehend the suspected recipient of the stolen items.
In another incident, reports indicate that operatives of the Lagos State Command arrested four individuals for allegedly robbing road users in traffic around the Ojota area. Hundeyin, in a statement on Tuesday, disclosed that the arrests resulted from a tip-off from one of the victims. The Rapid Response Squad swiftly responded, trailing and apprehending three suspects on Sunday, with the fourth suspect apprehended on Monday.
