In Abuja on Friday, Maj-Gen Buba Edward, the Director of Defence Media Operations, revealed that in 2023, troops neutralized 6,886 terrorists, arrested 6,970 suspects, and rescued 4,488 kidnapped citizens nationwide. Additionally, they recovered 100 million litres of stolen crude oil, 60 million litres of diesel, and various weapons and ammunition.
Buba highlighted regional threats, including armed banditry/terrorism in the North-Central and North-West, Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East, and secessionist agitations in the South-East and South-West. The South-South faced challenges like oil theft and youth restiveness.
Buba emphasized that the widespread occurrence of crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, communal clashes, and cattle rustling was evident across all six geopolitical zones.
He attributed the surge in crime during 2023 to the proliferation of small arms, which entered the country through porous borders and the prevalence of locally fabricated weapons.
Highlighting the challenges faced by the armed forces, Buba clarified that the expansive Bokkos and Barkin Ladi areas in Plateau State, covering over 2,315 square kilometers with more than 350 dispersed villages, posed difficulties in accessibility due to rugged terrain and considerable distances.
This hindered prompt responses to incidents unless credible intelligence was available before an attack.
Explaining the inability to repel the attacks in Plateau State, Buba detailed incidents on the night of December 23, 2023, where over 100 armed militant herders launched unprovoked attacks on Kambarpeli village. Troops arrived after the militants had inflicted harm.
On December 24, troops responded to 36 distress calls reporting coordinated attacks in Bokkos and parts of Barkin Ladi LGAs. While intervention occurred in 19 villages, some areas suffered damage before troops reached them.
In reaction to the letters warning residents of a possible attack, Buba pledged that a recurrence of such an incident in the state would not happen.
He stated, "Plateau will not face attacks again. We have implemented measures to address the limitations that hindered our timely response last time. We are aware of the letters and are taking decisive actions. We are actively pursuing those responsible for the crime."
