Gunmen assail the convoy of Chris Uba, resulting in the death of two security operatives.

Last night, gunmen attacked a convoy believed to be owned by the self-styled godfather of Anambra politics, Chief Chris Uba. Reports indicate that the convoy's vehicles were extensively damaged by bullets, resulting in the death of two police officers assigned to the politician. Another politician, Mr. Val Ozigbo, narrowly avoided the attack.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the incident occurred when Uba's convoy encountered the armed men stationed at UGA junction, leading to a shootout. Uba managed to escape unharmed due to his bulletproof vehicle, but the accompanying police officers lost their lives. Val Ozigbo, returning from Owerri with his family, successfully evaded the aggressive convoy, which later fell victim to the gunmen at UGA junction.

The attackers' apparent motive was to kidnap Chris Uba, causing injuries to several individuals. However, it remains unclear if anyone was actually kidnapped. The state police command, through its spokesperson DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, announced a thorough manhunt for the assailants who, disguised in military attire, infiltrated from a neighboring state and killed two police personnel on December 28, 2023, at around 6:30 p.m.

Officers who had advanced beyond the convoy they were escorting to alleviate traffic congestion engaged in a firefight. Other personnel retaliated, being cautious not to harm numerous motorists stuck in traffic, compelling the bandits to retreat.

A police-led mobile Forward Operating Base, actively patrolling the entire area during Christmas celebrations, promptly responded. The unit recovered a Lexus SUV used by the gang, neutralized an improvised explosive device discovered in the vehicle, and retrieved an AK-47 rifle from one of the deceased personnel.

Commending the tireless and courageous efforts of all personnel, Commissioner of Police CP Aderemi Adeoye, who designated the weekend and Christmas holidays as special working days, urged them not to be disheartened by the sacrifice of their colleagues from Enugu State Command. He encouraged drawing inspiration from their bravery in confronting the criminal gang.

Expressing condolences to the families of the deceased officers and Enugu State Police Command, he vowed that their sacrifice would not be in vain. He called on all officers and personnel of Anambra State Police Command to intensify their efforts, stay vigilant, and assured the use of technology to track down the criminals responsible for the attack on police personnel.
