The dynamics of Anambra politics in 2023 were significantly influenced by the roles played by Soludo, Peter Obi, Ifeanyi Ubah, and Ekwunife.

  Throughout the year 2023, several personalities and events played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of Anambra. Notable occurrences included the 2023 general elections, featuring Mr. 

 Peter Obi as the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), and the incumbent governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, along with other political figures.

Despite the year coming to an end, indications of notable changes persist. The November 2021 polls in Anambra resulted in the election of Prof Chukwuma Soludo as governor, who was sworn in on March 29, 2022.  

While the focus on Anambra might have diminished after the state elections, the entrance of former governor Peter Obi into the 2023 general elections as the Labour Party candidate altered the dynamics.

Peter Obi, known for his commendable performance as one of Anambra's governors and admired for his calm demeanor and openness, garnered attention. Although Anambra wasn't electing a governor in this round, the political activity surged due to Obi's involvement. 

 Concerns arose, especially regarding the possibility of Obi leveraging his popularity to influence legislative positions at both the national and state levels, potentially impacting Soludo and Anambra's votes in the presidential election. 

 While this didn't fully materialize, a significant portion of it was accomplished. Soludo, who had been relatively passive, became more engaged due to these permutations.

Anambra, traditionally aligned with APGA, faced a last-minute shift when Soludo realized a potential dominance by LP lawmakers in the state assembly. Acting swiftly, he secured 17 out of 30 seats in the assembly.

APGA claimed victory with 17 seats, LP secured eight, YPP won three, and PDP obtained two in the state assembly. APGA also clinched two out of the three Senate positions.  

However, accusations surfaced that Soludo spent a substantial N3.5 billion during the House of Assembly election, raising concerns of vote-buying to ensure APGA's majority.

The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (INTERSOCIETY) had earlier alleged that 20 states, including Anambra, were projected to spend around N50 billion on vote-buying during the polls. Anambra's estimated lavish spending was between N2 billion and N2.5 billion.

In the political landscape of 2023, Soludo, despite his APGA affiliation, emerged as a significant player. His opposition to the Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, raised eyebrows. 

 Instead of supporting his party's presidential candidate, Prof Peter Umeadi, Soludo was notably associated with the Peoples Democratic Party's candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Soludo's November 2022 open letter, titled 'History Beckons, I won’t be silent,' provided insight into the governor's mindset and stirred controversy for its perceived hostility, especially considering his previous alliance with Obi.  

While critics condemned Soludo for his apparent harshness towards Obi, the governor's supporters defended him, intensifying political tensions and divisions in the state.

As 2023 approaches its end, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra emerges as a party celebrating notable gains. Historically labeled as the 'Fulani party' in the state, the APC is gradually gaining acceptance after years of minimal impact in Anambra politics.  

Despite past failures in elections, the party is now capitalizing on defections. Senators Ifeanyi Ubah and Uche Ekwunife are among the recent defectors, forming an alliance with ambitions for the 2025 Anambra governorship. The APC in Anambra is optimistic, buoyed by unity and the addition of influential politicians, aiming to challenge Soludo in 2025.

Meanwhile, the once-dominant People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra is facing a decline. Litigations have left the party without leadership in the state, and its influence has waned, with stakeholders transitioning to other political entities. PDP, once a major force, is now on the brink of extinction in Anambra.
