On Thursday, Russia officially reopened its embassy in Burkina Faso after being closed for nearly 32 years. The Burkinabe foreign ministry confirmed the reopening in a statement, and the Russian ambassador to Ivory Coast, Alexei Saltykov, mentioned that President Vladimir Putin would appoint the new envoy. Saltykov, who will lead the mission temporarily, emphasized the strong and friendly ties between Russia and Burkina Faso, describing the nation as an "old partner." It's noteworthy that Burkina Faso faced two military coups last year, partly fueled by dissatisfaction with the inability to counter a growing jihadist insurgency.
Since assuming power in September 2022, the ruling junta has distanced Burkina Faso from France, its historical partner and former colonial power, opting to strengthen ties with Russia. In October, Burkina Faso entered into an agreement with Russia for the construction of a nuclear power plant, aiming to enhance energy supply in the Sahel country where less than a quarter of the population currently has access to electricity.

A House of Representatives member representing Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo state, Ikenga Ugochinyere, has said that some South-East governors have failed to bring an end to the crisis in the region because they are benefiting from it. Ugochinyere made the allegation while appearing on Arise TV on Wednesday morning, July 12. “There’s so much power that the president has in the constitution that he could use to bring this matter to a close within the shortest possible time. But the South-East leaders need to sit down to find a common ground over this issue of insecurity. The most important thing is that we want peace in the South-East because everywhere is devastated. Erosion is killing us. Infrastructure has collapsed. And then we cannot even sleep because our houses are being burnt and our people are being killed. This is not good. Any leader that wants the progress and unity of Nigeria definitely will open his doors to allow stakeholders to come in to allow stakeholders to fi
