Abia government urges parents to stay vigilant against child theft and provides contact lines for assistance.
The Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Abia State has responded to recent incidents of child theft in two different areas of the state. They have urged parents to be more vigilant about the whereabouts of their children. According to a press release by Mrs. Ngozi Blessing Felix, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Abia State, eight children from different families were reported stolen in Umuahia within a span of three weeks. The ministry emphasized the need for parents and guardians to exercise greater caution when entrusting the care of their children to others.
The commissioner advised the public to stay vigilant, report any suspicious individuals, and question those found in the company of many children at unusual times to the police or the ministry's complaint desk. Contact numbers (08130737970, 07031301431, and 0818390314) were provided for assistance. Additionally, the Abia State NSCDC Commandant, Mr. Paul Igwebuike, assured residents of heightened safety measures during the yuletide, with increased motorized patrols across the state. He emphasized strategic deployment of personnel to key locations, including recreation/event centers, motor parks, markets, malls, and other potential flashpoints.
