World Glaucoma Week 2022
World Glaucoma Week scheduled from March 6 to 12, 2022 is an initiative intended to put the spotlight on glaucoma as the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Glaucoma is a group of ocular diseases with various causes that ultimately are associated with a progressive optic neuropathy leading to loss of vision function. Glaucoma remains a growing public health concern as the numbers are projected to increase exponentially.
According to WHO report on Vision 2019, there are 76 million people aged 40 to 80 years with glaucoma worldwide. In Nigeria, the prevalence of glaucoma-specific blindness was 0.7 % among those aged 40 years and above (Abdul MM et al, 2009). It was estimated that 1.2 million adults in Nigeria had glaucoma in 2012. (Kyari F et al 2015).
Prompt diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma can prevent needless vision impairment. Unfortunately, so many are unaware they have the disease or may not have access to care.
World Glaucoma Awareness week provides a platform for optometrists, other eye health professionals and key stakeholders through events, to actively stimulate dialogue aimed at sensitizing the public and improving glaucoma care for patients.
To this effect, the NEC enjoins all NOA Members led by their distinguished State Chairpersons to celebrate the WGA week by doing the following amongst other activities:
(1) Publish the e-flyers via social media: WhatsApp, Instagram. Facebook etc
Stop the sight thief, commit to annual eye test
The world is beautiful, save your sight
(2) Carry out Radio or TV talk shows, Question and Answer sessions aimed at creating greater glaucoma awareness to the Public.
(3) Organize symposia for NOA members to update their knowledge on current practices in glaucoma management.

A House of Representatives member representing Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo state, Ikenga Ugochinyere, has said that some South-East governors have failed to bring an end to the crisis in the region because they are benefiting from it.
