On 8 June each year,
we celebrate the ocean, its importance in our lives, and how each of us can
protect it, no matter where we live. World Oceans Day raises the profile
of the ocean, connects people worldwide, and inspires continuing action
year-round to protect and restore this amazing resource that we all depend on.
Each year an
increasing number of countries and organizations mark 8 June as an opportunity
to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea.
The Government of
Canada proposed the concept of a World Ocean Day, at the Earth Summit in Rio de
Janeiro in 1992. In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly passed a
resolution officially recognizing 8 June as World Oceans Day each year.
We celebrate World Oceans Day to remind everyone of
the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our
planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe. The purpose of the Day is to
inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a
worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the
world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's
oceans. They are a major source of food and medicines and a critical part of
the biosphere. In the end, it is a day to celebrate together the beauty, the
wealth and the promise of the ocean.
We have an opportunity to explore the gender dimension
of humankind’s relationship with the ocean.
This year, we strive to build greater ocean and gender
literacy, and to discover possible ways to promote gender equality in
ocean-related activities such as marine scientific research, fisheries, labour
at sea, migration by sea and human trafficking, as well as policy-making and
management.
The importance of gender equality — in particular for
the effective conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine
resources — is increasingly recognized. However, there is very little data and
research on these issues, and a concerted action towards gender equality and
the empowerment of women and girls is still needed in all ocean-related sectors
to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5.
This year, the President of the General Assembly
launched 'Play It Out', a global campaign against plastic pollution. Decades of
overuse and a surge in single-use plastics has led to a global environmental
catastrophe. Today, 13,000,000 tonnes of plastic leak into the ocean every
year, what among other damage, kill 100,000 marine animals annually. While most
plastics are expected to remain intact for decades or centuries after use,
those that do erode end up as micro-plastics, consumed by fish and other marine
wildlife, quickly making their way into the global food chain.
From plastic straws to plastic bags, we all are at the
frontline of efforts to #BeatPlasticPollution.

World TB Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day and World AIDS Day. World Tuberculosis Day, observed on 24 March each year, was designed to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and efforts to eliminate the disease. In 2012, 8.6 million people fell ill with TB, and 1.3 million died from the disease, mostly in low and middle-income countries. According to World Health Organization , “Each year, we commemorate World Tuberculosis (TB) Day on March 24 to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic. The date marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes TB, which opened the way toward
Some Governors are enjoying Insecurity in South East – Imo House of Reps member, Ugochinyere Ikenga, says

A House of Representatives member representing Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo state, Ikenga Ugochinyere, has said that some South-East governors have failed to bring an end to the crisis in the region because they are benefiting from it. Ugochinyere made the allegation while appearing on Arise TV on Wednesday morning, July 12. “There’s so much power that the president has in the constitution that he could use to bring this matter to a close within the shortest possible time. But the South-East leaders need to sit down to find a common ground over this issue of insecurity. The most important thing is that we want peace in the South-East because everywhere is devastated. Erosion is killing us. Infrastructure has collapsed. And then we cannot even sleep because our houses are being burnt and our people are being killed. This is not good. Any leader that wants the progress and unity of Nigeria definitely will open his doors to allow stakeholders to come in to allow stakeholders to fi
