For the second time in six months, a Boeing 737 Max has had a deadly crash
The crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 302 on Sunday (March 10), which killed all 157 people on board, is the second deadly incident in less than six months involving Boeing’s 737 Max series, an aircraft seen as a game-changer for the short-haul industry.
In October 2018, a Lion Air flight departing from Jakarta crashed 13 minutes after takeoff,
killing all 189 on board. The crash investigation first looked at
malfunctioning sensors on the aircraft, and then turned to the role of a new anti-stall mechanism in the 737 Max 8 and 9 series planes.

time, before losing contact with the control tower six minutes later,
at 8.44am.
The pilot had alerted controllers “he had difficulties” and wanted to
turn back, the head of Ethiopian Airlines said, in circumstances
similar to the Lion Air crash in which the pilot also requested he
wanted to return back to the airport soon after take-off.
Flight ET 302 crashed near the town of Bishoftu, 62km south-east of Addis Ababa, the airline said.
“The group CEO who is at the scene right now deeply regrets to
confirm there are no survivors,” the airline tweeted alongside a picture
of Mr Tewolde GebreMariam in a suit holding a piece of debris inside a
large crater.
The aircraft had shattered into many pieces and was severely burnt, a
Reuters reporter at the scene of the crash said. Clothing and personal
effects were scattered widely over the field where the plane came down.
The flight had unstable vertical speed after take-off, said flight tracking website Flightradar24 on its Twitter feed.
Passengers from 33 countries were aboard, said Mr Tewolde in a news
conference. The dead included Kenyan, Ethiopian, American, Canadian,
French, Chinese, Egyptian, Swedish, British and Dutch citizens.
